Solid Gold: A Brief History

Once upon a VA Bar jam session, back in 2012, four funky friends started making sweet music together. It wasn't long before they realized that their grooves were too tight not to start a band - from there, "Tavey Lean & the Solid Gold Dream Machine" was born. Due to the transient nature of our beloved Beijing, the band has seen a few different line ups over the years - scroll down to learn more about the solid 9 piece team who creates the distinctive sound which makes Solid Gold a unique act in the Beijing nightlife today. From the beginning, Solid Gold has been committed to bringing the funk and sweet soul to the 4 Corners of Beijing and beyond.

Band Members

TAVEY LIN

Lead vocalist. Tavey began his musical career as a classically trained pianist and cellist. After abandoning the structured and regimented world of classical music, he taught himself guitar and began performing in rock and reggae bands. He eventually founded what would become Solid Gold with bassist Sam Silverman, reconnecting with those golden oldies radio stations he sang along to in the back of his folks' car as a kid. Tavey is also the owner of 4corners bar, where the Dream Machine rehearses and plays many of its shows.

SAM SILVERMAN

Bass guitar. Boston native, Samuel Silverman, is a seasoned bassist that has played at almost every Beijing venue over his past 4 years here. He feels comfortable across all genres - RnB, Jazz, Rock, Folk - but most loves playing in The Solid Gold Dream Machine. With fifteen years on the bass, Silverman has performed across the globe with highlights including playing with folk legend Tom Rush, performing live on CCTV, and recording for North Star Records.

DANIEL ROTHWELL

Trombone. Daniel Liam Rothwell plays the trombone like he means it. Whether it be funk, rock, ska, or soul - this guy has the pipes and arms to wield this ungodly instrument. Heavily influenced by everything from Disney to Hardcore Metal, Dan brings a unique perspective to Solid Gold.

ITAY KOCHVA

Tenor Saxophone. With over 20 years of playing tenor sax under his belt, Itay has preformed with big bands, jazz trios and everything in between, covering a wide range of music styles, from Jazz and Blues, through R'N'B and soul, to Rock, Folk and Reggea. After preforming and recording in Isreal, Itay joined Solid Gold in 2012 in his quest to groove Beijing.

ORVIL LAYNE

Keyboards. Orvil is a lifetime musician hailing form the UK. As a multi-instrumentalist (drums, keys, ... anything really!), he brings a deep musicality to the band an incredible awarness of all his sonic surroundings. Plus, he can bring the funk like no one else. Cooler than cool doesn't even begin to describe him.

MARCO BRUNDELRE

Drums. Marco Brundelre studied at the elite Berklee School of Music, where he learned to bang on inanimate objects in a such a rhythmic manner that he could simultaneously express his inner most feelings whilst making people shake their booties on the dance floor. Now, that's an education.

R.C. GRANGER

Trumpet. RC has been playing music, with a focus on trumpet/brass, for most of his life. Having grown up in a musical family (mezzo soprano mother, percussionist father, guitarist older brother, and reed playing younger brother), RC has been surrounded by many different styles of music. Having played tuba and trumpet throughout school and college, he took a brief hiatus from group play until, by chance, he met Tavey Lin here in Beijing.

RICHARD BARNES

Electric Guitar. Growing up just outside the world’s urban mecca for aspiring musicians, Richard is a British guitarist from London, with over 10 years of live and studio experience. Richard has released an original progressive album in the UK, as well as playing some of London’s most prestigious venues. He is an active member of Beijing’s dynamic and diverse music scene, bringing his distinctive sound to some of Beijing’s most famed venues.
